The fourth sign of the zodiac, Cancer, covers those born between 22nd June and 22nd July. Its symbol is the crab, which suits the sign rather well. A Cancerian can be warm and easygoing one minute, then withdrawn or short-tempered the next. That shifting quality makes them tricky to read.

Cancer is a water sign ruled by the moon, and both feed into the personality. Just as the moon pulls the tides, Cancerians tend to move through emotional highs and lows that can seem to come from nowhere. When the mood turns, they often pull back into themselves, much like a crab disappearing into its shell. It is not always sulking or rudeness. More often it is a way of protecting themselves until they feel steady again.

Sensitive and sympathetic

For all the moodiness, people born under this sign are usually very kind. They pick up on what others are feeling without needing it spelled out, and they take genuine interest in the people around them. A friend going through a rough patch will often hear from a Cancerian first.

That sensitivity cuts both ways. Because they feel things deeply, they can also be hurt easily. A throwaway comment might land much harder than the speaker realised, and in most cases the Cancerian will not say anything at the time. They will go quiet, think it over, and possibly bring it up days later, or not at all.

The sidestep

Crabs do not walk in straight lines, and neither do Cancerians. They often have a roundabout way of getting what they want. Rather than ask outright or push for something directly, they tend to work towards it slowly, sometimes in ways that are not obvious to anyone watching. It can look indecisive, but it usually is not. They simply prefer the indirect route.

This is why Cancerians are better judged by what they do than by what they say. Ask one for a favour and the first answer might be a flat no, or a long list of reasons why it is awkward. Then a few hours later they turn up and help anyway. Most people who know a Cancerian well learn to ignore the initial response and wait for the action.

Hard shell, soft inside

The tough exterior is real, but it is mostly defensive. Cancerians put up walls because they know how easily they can be knocked off balance, and the shell gives them somewhere to retreat to when life gets noisy. People who only meet them in passing sometimes describe them as standoffish or hard to get to know. Those who get past the first layer usually find the opposite: someone affectionate, generous and quite soft-hearted.

The trick, if there is one, is patience. Cancerians do not hand out trust easily, and they do not enjoy being rushed into closeness. Give them time and space, and the shell tends to open on its own.

Loyalty and home life

If you take the trouble to earn a Cancerian's trust, you tend to keep it. Loyalty is one of the strongest traits of the sign. They remember kindness, they stand by the people they care about, and they are not easily talked out of an opinion they have formed about someone. Once a Cancerian decides you are one of theirs, gossip and outside opinions will not shift them.

The flip side is that they need a fair amount of reassurance in return. Because their moods move around so much, they can talk themselves into thinking they have been forgotten or pushed aside when nothing of the sort has happened. A bit of regular attention goes a long way. It does not have to be a grand gesture. A message, a phone call, or remembering something they mentioned last week will do.

Most Cancerians are also strongly attached to home life. Family, in whatever form that takes, tends to sit near the centre of everything they do. They often enjoy cooking, hosting, looking after people, and making the place they live in feel comfortable. Even the more outgoing types usually have a homebody streak underneath. That attachment runs into the past as well. Cancerians are often nostalgic, holding on to old photos, letters and childhood things. They feel time and change keenly, and keeping hold of small reminders is one way they cope with it.

The less flattering side

No sign is all good points, and Cancer has a few rough edges worth being honest about. The mood swings can be wearing for the people closest to them. They can brood, hold on to slights longer than is healthy, and occasionally tip into self-pity. Because they take things personally, they sometimes read criticism into comments that were not meant that way at all.

They can also be cautious to a fault. The same instinct that makes them careful with their feelings can make them slow to take chances, whether at work, in relationships or anything that involves stepping into the unknown. Pushing a Cancerian into a quick decision rarely ends well. They need time to mull things over, and they tend to make better choices when they have had it.

In short, Cancerians are emotional, intuitive, loyal and a bit moody. They feel more than they let on, they care more than they show, and they get there in their own time rather than anyone else's. Take them as they are, give them a bit of patience when the tide goes out, and you will usually find a steady friend on the other side of it.

I love my own company and happy to just be. I dont like big crowds and try to avoid going to celebrations. If i do go Im the one sitting in the corner observing. If its my immediate family then Im shining like a star in the middle of everything. Im a natural born leader from the back, I make sure everything is planned properly, everyone gets looked after and no one gets left behind. Happy to let others take care of the front. Very intuitive and can feel the change in atmospheres and peoples moods in an instant. If my senses tell me not to go to certain places I listen, I can read people a mile off even from a photo. Theres only a hand full of people I fully trust but I can work with that, I just have my radars out and do what i need and get out.

I'm an empath, I feel so drained when the people and things around me are in turmoil or maybe even just sick, when people tell me their lives it's as if I feel every pain, happiness etc. I often feel sick even though I'm not truly sick, large crowds make me feel like I can't breath, probably because I'm absorbing everyones energy good or bad that's around me at the time, when I stay happy and make myself be positive, everyone else tends to stay the same way, if I'm sick or I'm angry I notice the atmosphere around me change tremendously, I love too hard often because I always try to put myself in someone else's shoes and can find an excuse for them due to the fact that I can sense their pain and want to nurture them,my family is the most important thing in my life, friends come last , but i always try to help others, I have a soft spot for animals babies and the less fortunate or disabled

I can spot a phony in a heartbeat! It got me out of some very scary moments!
I despise people that take advantage of another person! Money was never the big thing for me. I love engineering from the biggest of projects to the tiniest of them.
I love beautiful kind hearted women, and despise phonies! I served in the United States Marine Corps as a bridge engineer. If they ran into a canyon, a ravine, a river, or a mudbog, I was the one that they came to. I am now 58, I struggle with Primary Progressive MS, and most of the time I feel like the south end of a northbound pachyderm---but I'm still tickin'! I raised a family, my wife died of cancer 8 years ago, my kids are all grown up, and moved away, and doing well for themselves. I only have one more item on my bucket list and it will take years to complete: should keep me busy! I love life, and I want to be around for a while!

100% territorial and emotional I find too much I give to others becàuse I feel emotionally happy and connected through giving but leave myself short ...the word love I take very deep and seriously but find it's shallow in others . I've found it hypnotizes me as their puppet to a degree but if I sense distance or fowl play I do not sleep until I find something and thoughts manifest to a sinister place ...all that's needed to defuse my ticking time bomb is purity and reasurance of honest love and affection .... pessimism and faith go hand in hand 50/50

I'm a cancerian being born on the 25th of june but I don't have that great a memory like it says? And when it says, "When asked for help, their first response might be no, but in the end they always come through." I don't say no, instead I say yes when asked t o help. I would only say no a few times but say yes most of the time. Some of it is true though. I'm moody and cranky. But I don't like to overeat (I'm picky and sometimes wouldn't eat) so now I have many questions.

Cancerians are beautiful people. Just misunderstood. Betrayal comes to cancers a lot. The greatest joy of the cancer is finding someone who is truly genuine. I feel like cancers can go from 0 to 10 real quick. Cancers do not tolerate disrespect. And cancers will cut anyone off that they feel as though has been disrespectful to them. Ultimately cancers hold friends with a great deal of responsibility. By remaining loyal and honest to them. And betrayal is not tolerated to any degree.

Look, these things are meant to be fun, but some do take it to heart. I'm a cancerian 2nd of July, I get territorial when it comes to my partner, I put myself out there to the point I burn out emotionally, gradually increasing in self confidence I adore knowledge and learning, the first one to stand up for someone I care for I'll gladly dive right in but I've come to learn to ask for both sides of the story before hand since people have a habit of not giving me the full picture and I'm a hot head when someone I care about is hurt. I don't believe there is any excuse to be nasty but at the same time I could understand the emotions and thoughts. I do get emotional and pull away so I don't burden others and I don't get let down, it's a struggle but I try to be strong for others. It is unfortunate to read what some people have experienced and I feel apologetic to them, not every cancerian is like that or at least I hope not and if they are I hope they can grow to become better individuals. There is a lot more to someone then their starsign.

I love a Cancerian. I'm an Aquarius. Even though i find certain idiosyncrasies to be true, and humorous, I feel that no matter what sign your born under makes no excuse for poor communication. I have yet to have a good experience of a cancerian. I find them to be oversensitive, spiteful, argumentative and shouty. Unfortunately I am surrounded by cancerian family members and colleagues. I did date a couple of cancerian men but I soon tired of their 'my way or the highway' attitude and their misconception that they were 'better' than me... So I gladly took the highway and never regretted it. One ex cancerian went as far as to physically assault me... Which was a huge mistake. Even when the police arrested him he was screeching 'do you know who I am' and lashing out. He was the most vindictive person I ever met. If I find out you're a cancerian I am polite.... but I give you a very wide berth.

I am a cancerian I would say I am nurturing and empathetic however I am also moody and maybe a bit protective but I love myself to an extend where I sometimes doubt myself but then I think about what’s wrong and write down all my good traits and bad traits and I always find more good traits I wouldn’t call myself shy when I’m crushing on someone I make jokes and sometimes be sarcastic, even though I dress very fancy I’m one of the guys !!! Hi all. I'm a proud Cancerian, it wasn't always that way though. My birthday is on the 22nd July, I wouldn't say I'm a typical Cancerian because I'm not moody at all in fact I really don't like moody people and I'm not clingy. I am very sensitive though and I always expected people to just know how I'm feeling or at least be mindful of me because I'm always mindful of others. I'm definately an ambivert, I really care about people and I am always ready and waiting to lend an ear and support when ever a situation calls for it but at the same time I don't like being around people and would prefer it if they stayed away from me, I prefer to be by myself or with family, people who i love and know for a fact love me. I have learnt to not let my weaknesses as a Cancerian control me, I know what they are but I take control of them. This has made my life so much easier and I find that people generally gravitate towards me even though I'm not a social butterfly I guess it's because I'm a good listener and this allows me to stay safely tucked away in my shell while I let people pour their hearts out to me and I help where ever I can and learn more about people in general without getting out of my shell.

I'm a first decan Cancer born June 28th. I realize with these comments I've read that we are so hard on our selves. I find myself sometimes making small complaints or being hard on myself because I always want to be the best version of myself. It's okay to want to evolve but first We have to fully accept things that we can not change and LOVE ourselves completely regardless of the current circumstances. Our pasts have shaped and molded us into survivors and stregnthened us. Everything we are going through is for a reason and always remember bad times don't last long. I was born July 6, and I have been through lots of struggles . But proud to say I am a survivor. Yes I'm too sensitive that I can sense others even without speaking. And that's the reason why no one would want to be around me for long. Guess people don't like someone who knows what they're really feeling and thinking. Honestly, I feel safer on my own than being with others. I love partying but once or twice a month only . My husband loves my food. And I'm really sensitive to dirt that's why I keep everything perfectly clean every single day. I have a beautiful son and husband. We are having a very wonderful life(he is a virgo). And what can I say. Those bad years from long time ago are left to be just memories now. And I know we cancerians are tough. Survivor. Listen to your instinct but left that feeling of insecurities behind. They're not real. We are perfect in our own way. I also don't love instability but I am adaptable and flexible. I know all of us are.

My life is very out of balance and I have a high irritability for not feeling secure or in a job that I would like to be in the rest of my life. Ohhh ? what is that, what is something you would like to do? Oh well, that changes every month or every 6 months maybe a teacher, plumber, criminal attorney, painter, electrician, on an electric company, Trampoline Park company, oh my hell it is so stressful. All of my stress comes from this indecisiveness as well. I wish I could just wake up and be in a job that I can excel and be a part of the best job in the world. I don't even know what direction to go in. I already wasted 3 years in criminal justice with nothing to show for it because guess what oh yeah I changed my dang mind. If I could afford school maybe I would be a teacher If I could but can't afford school. I have tons of love built up inside for all those amazing children. So I could go on forever I just hate that I have to live unsettled because I don't know what to do and I change interests so dang much.

I'm not in the exact situation as you but very similar. So I say "Where I am at in life is exactly where I need to be." For what ever reason that might be either to help others or to help myself...an opportunity to live life or an opportunity to take a break from it. I have learned that troubles or suffering in my life come from wanting what I don't have or having what I don't want. So I revert back to simplicity and at best I try to stay on the side of gratitude, being grateful for what I do have and grateful for what I don't have. Then I welcome patience because it may be along stay....life is balance....with out sadness how would you ever know what it is to be happy. Life is telling you something...Arthur Mendelson said " if you focus on the problem you'll never see the solution....never focus on the problem". I hope this has helped you because I too need to hear these things....

Hi, I am unemployed and this have has me stress out.i got hired on 9/18/17 for a security job but the company don't have work for me.i am in need for a income . It been since June that I have been unemployed what is wrong.i feel my luck is running out but I do have Faith in God and I have been praying for my luck to come and I be happy again.i don't to ask my children for anything and they don't ask me if I am alright and do I need anything. I'm a female about to turn 30 in less than a month,on July 8. As im getting older and more intetested in astrology im often amazed at how accurate my personality traits are described when reading about cancerian. I love to help others and in the past have not felt satisfied when I am in seclusion and afraid to have social contact and get taken advantage of. I feel best about myself when I am making a difference in spreading positive energy and affection even in the smallest way, like giving a stranger a compliment. I haven't dated for most of my 20s after a serious of heart crushing relationship I "retreated into my shell" to keep from getting hurt again. Recently I met a man who is an Aquarius and I'm beginning to fall in love. I have never felt the need to stay at arms length away from him to keep from getting hurt its quite the opposite i want to let him in and be with him, the only thing that worried me is his sign and that as a cancer I will be to clingy and need more affection and attention than an Aquarius can give. Any advice as to follow my head or my heart would be greatly appreciated. Being ruled by my emotions and having my grandmother pass away only a few days ago im afraid to push him away by needing to much. Is that my answer though? if im afraid to open up 100% then does that mean he isnt the right man?? He is very intelligent and a Dr which is very attractive to me in reguards that her wants to help others as much as I do. I think he is willing to pot in the same amount of commitment into this relationship as i would. I guess my main question is, can a cancer be loved enough by an Aquarius??

True analogy. My problem with my cancer guy is he says we can never be together Cuz he can't commit . He can't be the guy who does family reunions and Christmas dinners. He enjoys my company . He has said he loves me and wants me in his life. He's older then me he's 60 . Will he ever change his mind we've been intimate for over a year and he changes like that tide.

My son is a cancer and I tell you this is right on if he weren't my son I wouldn't have anything to do with him. Sometimes he is downright hateful. He and his girl are cancers literally I think sometimes. He has cost my husband and I thousands of $$$$$ I love to hate him and her.

The intuitive part is true to me and i can sidestep and get what they are after. Insightful, observational and memory ring true. Ive come out of my shell. Not clingy and unpredicatable, which i can see in other signs (just my observation though.

I have been dating a cancerian for three years now. I have found that on the outside they pretend to be something they are not. In his case a gentleman who loves one woman and only her, but he is not. The loyalty part I have found not to be true as he has cheated on me (with men) and lied to me over and over and over again throughout this whole relationship. They live double lives and hurt the people who love them most. He was just using me for the show, to protect his true identity from his straight friends and his family.

This is so familiar in terms of who I am and the problem is that I am least understood by those who are part of my life. How I wish I could be understood better. It is difficult as a a Cancerian to adjust to suit personalities of others. I also have a son who is one and I notice the same traits albeit a somewhat different personality. Maybe those who are associated with Cancerians should read this description so that they are better informed.

OMG! this is so true! I have a friend who is a cancer and she can see anything that is wrong... It's true that if you win their trust they will be loyal and this is true! MY friend never stops and even if I ruin her life she still forgives me! My friend is maybe one of the sweetest ppl I've met or the most emotional ! :) :P

Im a Cancerian and I can confirm this is absolutely spot on. Everything described is me completely.

I often feel in love my sign is a curse, when I love someone I love them completely and would do anything for them, however I get hurt too easily and im sensitive that can cause problems in a relationship which it does for me.

I know a cancarian who works hard and he can b moody at times but l don't care l worry about him he has heart trouble and is diabetic he needs reassurance and live and then he will b ok. They are shy people and get moody as well.

Typifies me exactly. Love hard, can't let go, loyal, easily hurt, ruled by my feelings not by logic. Not easy being a cancerian but I wouldn't change it for any other sign. We're strong and positive inside as well as soft and caring. No matter how hard life is we get through it all. We're fighters in the positive sense. But most of all our strength is our tenderness. The way we love others so much, no one can beat this!!
